Bridgewater Area 2006 : The scenery in this part of Nova Scotia is unforgettable. As one gentleman put it ... "it's been photographed to death ..." and with good reason. The beaches are pristine (as are most beaches in Nova Scotia) and the government has had the good sense and foresight to reserve the very best of them for public use only (no private ownership). This gallery contains a few scenic spots we had time to see on our visit in Sept. 2006.

The towns and villages in the Bridgewater area are wonderfully quaint and artsy. The architecture is fabulous and we promise to revisit and show you some more of it in the summer of 2008.

Liverpool Area - Western Head : Western Head is situated just below Liverpool Nova Scotia and serves as one of Environment Canada's most modern weather stations. The site began as a fog alarm station in 1930s and expanded to include the lighthouse in 1962. The lighthouse was automated in 1988, but includes a role for mariners in the future as part of navigation by GPS (Global Positioning System). Four red and white posts burrowed into the ground and completely enclosed within a high electrified fence are used for underground weather forecasting.

When we toured the grounds it was a beautiful crisp and clear day in November, but shortly after we arrived the fog started to come in from the ocean. It set off a continual series of fog horn blasts at 5 minute intervals. The sound was extremely loud and penetrating - you could feel it in your chest. After the first couple of blasts, we reached for cotton balls in our first aid kit.

The waves at Western Head are the highest and the strongest we've ever seen in calm ocean conditions. They easily reached 30 ft (9+m) with single wave action. When two or more waves crested at the same time they were higher still. The sound of the waves crashing against the huge boulders gave serious competition to the fog horn. This is one spot we wouldn't want to be caught in during a North Atlantic storm.

Liverpool Area - Victoria Lake : Victoria Lake is located near Liverpool Nova Scotia. A natural land bar (bridge) separates the lake's fresh water from the ocean side (salt water). We arrived late in the day in November 2006 just as a fine mist was settling over the area. It was an almost surreal scene to behold as the sun was beginning to set and the tide was coming in gently.
