Bald Eagles Nest : On our way to Blomidon, we encountered a scene of nature in action. A hawk took down a pheasant in the field and several large crows and a male bald eagle wanted it as well. The mid-air battle occurred over 15 minutes with neither side claiming the prey.

Three agressive crows took on the hawk flying circles around him. One crow let out a yell as the bald eagle joined the battle and three more crows arrived to take on the eagle. Feathers were flying in every direction. The crows gave up as they do not have the same stamina of the eagle and hawk. None of the birds were willing to actually snatch the dead pheasant as long as we were there, so we left and let nature take it's proper course.

I was able to get within 100 ft. (30.4m) of the hawk and eagle. I tried my best to get closer to the eagle's nest, but he would not allow me to get any closer than about 300 ft. (91.4m).

Embden Geese and Ducks : Snow Geese, Cackling Goose, Pekin White Duck, Mallard Ducks, and Common Brown Ducks.

March 12, 2007 - 08:00 Sunrise.
Prince Albert Park, Darmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Temperature: -20c (-4f)

All of these birds are wild. They gather in various parks in and around Halifax, Nova Scotia for refuge from the bitter cold of the North Atlantic coastline in winter. These particular photos were shot in Prince Albert Park located along the shores of Halifax Harbour. It was a very busy morning in the park. The Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens) were busy preening and having their first meal of the day while a Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii) was swimming with many of the ducks. They were all keeping a very close eye on me and my camera :).

I wasn't the only casual visitor in the park that morning. A neighbourhood cat was on the prowl. It's owners were wise enough to attach a small jingle bell to it's collar to warn the wildlife of it's approach. Take a walk with me and enjoy the hustle and bustle of early morning park life. I hope you enjoy the brilliant sunrise reflections in the water as well :).

Winter Ducks : The most common ducks found in Nova Scotia during the bitter cold winter months are American Wigeons, Mallard ducks and Common Brown Ducks. Ducks can be found in large flocks wherever there is open water between the ice. They prefer to stay sheltered in coves, bays, and harbors where the winds are not as strong. When temperatures plunge to sub-zero readings, ducks will expand their feathers and tuck their necks in close to their chests in an attempt to keep warm.

Semipalmated Plovers : On our way to see a light house in Port Bickerton, we noticed a few small shorebirds, which resembled piping plovers. I contacted Environment Canada and they explained the differences. Thanks. :)

As we drove to the lighthouse, the car and break water served as a blind. I was lucky to capture these small fast little birds.

Enjoy
