banjon > Day 211 - Bashful Fruit

A yellow-green apple showing signs of blushing red

The setup was a black board in back, white board on left, bounced the flash upward at a 45, and then used my hand to cover the on-camera flash which gave a rose-tint to right of the apple. I like learning how light can be cast and the subtle differences a degree or two make.

banjon > Day 210 - Morning Has Broken...

A Common Eider stretches as the sun breaks the horizon. Many took to the water as the tide started to come in.

banjon > Day 209 - Turbulent Sands

As the tide retracted, the muddy sand revealed just how strong the under toe is at the Lawrencetown Conrad Beach inlet. Some of the patterns on the beach are amazing. This was pretty cool to walk on, as it was hardened by the weight of the water.

Last nights storm left tons of seaweed strewn on the beach, the shorebirds were running around inspecting each morsel. Even the Eiders came ashore to rest in the seaweed, and then began searching for snacks. It was funny to watch all the Eider bums in the air as each wave crashed down. Some would even ride the wave, or keep on preening as if nothing happened. :)

banjon > Day 207 (2/2) - Piping Plover

They are fascinating to watch if you're lucky enough to spot one or two. When they hunt for small shrimp or blood worms, they go into a crouching position and freeze for a moment then peck the sand for the prize. The soft beige colors in their feathers camouflages them extremely well on the beaches.

Shorebirds cohabitate nicely with one another. It's not uncommon to see plovers, sanderlings, and sandpipers sharing the same beach and flying in groups together. However, Piping Plovers are on the brink of extinction with only about 100 pairs existing on the beaches of Nova Scotia.

banjon > Day 207 (1/2) - American Mink

I spotted beautiful American Mink running around the shoreline. Soon to be joined by his companion. We watched both jump from rocks and sneak around the bridge. They are very inquisitive.

I'll have to revisit the area once I have more time to observe them.

We spent a few hours observing the piping plovers that were feeding on the beach. We saw two today, which was a real treat as these birds are on the endangered list in North America. I think there are less than 100 pairs remaining in Nova Scotia. (photo)

banjon > Day 206 (1/2) - White Sand Abstract

Loved the patterns of wind blown sand. :)

It was a great day out, saw lots of shorebirds.
Check out the juvenile Sanderling, poor little guy was a bit chilly in the high winds.
We also saw some Gannets plunge diving, that was cool to see 6 or 7 splashes and some kamikazzi dives. :)

A bit late in the day, feel asleep at the computer last night. hehe Long fruitful days will do that.

banjon > Day 206 (2/2) - Juvenile Sanderling

We were walking on the rocky beach, I didn't even see him as he blended in so well. When I realized, I slowly backed away. He was shivering and getting ready to roost pecking at this annoying fly buzzing his head. hehe I guess they hate flies too. :)

banjon > Day 205 - The Little Wanderer

The day started out dreary and rainy. Pat and I debated whether to head out to Conrad Beach for the 5:30am sunrise, but it was pouring rain, so we left a little later. When we arrived at the beach the sun was coming out and it was beautiful. We were lucky enough to spot and photograph our first Piping Plover (a very rare little bird that is only found in one or two pairs on a few beaches in Nova Scotia - placed on the endangered list) mixed in with a lot of Sanderlings and Sandpipers.

Later on we met up with Melanie and Barb and headed out to Canning and Medford (Bay of Fundy shore). We spotted a few Bald Eagles and hawks along the way. At Canning, we met a gentlemen walking with his two white dogs who showed us the way along the paths to the grassy mud flats (clay-like soil) and beach. I think the dogs just came along to show how well they can play in the mud... white plus red mud clay = not a pretty sight.. hehe

On our way back this little girl passed us by. Only a quick hello and a shy smile and she was on her way - all the while having a wonderful discussion with and singing to her little lamb doll . You see she had places to go, people to see, and things to do.

The late afternoon sun lit up the sea grass and red mud flats. On the far shore is Blomidon's North Mountain.

banjon > Day 204 - A Sunset Walk on Conrad Beach

As the tide rolls in, the roar was quite loud, but in a relaxing kind of way. Making you listen, and not speak for a few moments. Just you and the heartbeat of the Earth. It sort of lulls you into a sense of being making all your cares and troubles disappear... for a little while anyway.

The dogs seem to love the run of the white sandy beach. The strewn seaweed offers a splash of color dotting the beaches with oranges, yellows, deep reds, purples, and greens. When the wind kicks up, the mist from the breaking surf just fills the sky making it look mystical, even surreal.

Often times, you may be the only one on the entire beach. Amazing...

It was such a gorgeous day... makes up for two very miserable, damp, rainy days.
