banjon > Day 196 - The Field of Three Doors

Wasn't that a Moody Blues tune... Timothy Leary...

Thanks to a creative artist in Grand Pre who placed three doors in their field. When I saw them I was totally taken back, and said WOW! I can imagine with a blue sky what it must look like.

The image is a composite of two images I took today. The clouds are from a nasty wicked storm that moved in earlier today. Wicked lightning and wind. Pouring cats and dogs. The color of the clouds is the original color, no desaturation.

The second image, the three doors, I removed the pale white sky and overlayed onto the clouds. I added a blue tint to the door on the right, and inverted the sky on the middle door.

The middle door has me thinking... whats with #9... maybe a Beatles reference.

Just moments earlier we saw three bald eagles in the corn fields looking for pheasants. I was trying to get closer and setup my tripod, but before I could even setup the tripod he was in the air. I think he was waiting for the other younger eagle to finish his fly by.. sort of like a parent watching if the kid did okay. :)

Very few shorebirds today, I think they flew out of harms way prior to the nasty storm.

banjon > Day 195 - The Fisherman

So there I was, taking photos of about a hundred sandpipers, plovers, and redstones, when out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a white gull. When I realized it was an Osprey, then when I saw his cargo, I was amazed.

It looks like it could be a salmon, large bass, or trout. Not sure. :)

I traveled to Hartlen Point today, near Devil's Island. There were a good handful of shore birds, about 300 or so, 100 or more black ducks, about 30 loons, 20 cormorants, 30 herons, about 10 Ospreys, and 1 Bald Eagle (in Halifax Harbour just gliding along).

Then it was off to Rainbow Haven bird sanctuary - saw another 300 or more shore birds there. However, the flight of the gulls was amazing. There were about 400 gulls or more in the air, hovering, diving, swooping. It was something to see. I worried a bit about some fallout.. hehe So I talked to the park staff, they said the flying ant eggs hatched so they were everywhere. So it was a feeding frenzy.

Then I hit the Salt Marshes, wow.. first time there. It was unreal. Besides all the mosquitoes... I think some of them could count as small birds... there were lots of herons, small birds, and shore birds.

It was amazing. Close to about 2500 or more birds in 4 hours. I ran out of memory cards.
oh well

banjon > Day 194 - Samantha

Samantha chose this shot for her portfolio. (This is from the Hot Rod and Model shoot last week, I finally got them all processed).

I really love how the sun added nice highlights to her beautiful facial features.
Barb said of them all, this was her favorite photo.

This experience has opened my mind to try more portraits, just not of Barb - she still won't let me. hehe Someday..

BARB: Keep dreaming...

banjon > Day 193 - Is it time yet?

Football pre-season has begun. Woohoo! Go Chargers! :P

I think I need a newer helmet... they are so hard to come by on the east coast. When I traveled to California some years ago, I stocked up on some Charger gear. I've been following them since Dan Fouts was at the helm. Maybe they will win a Super Bowl someday... hehe :)

I'm not sure what you call it, but after the first flash went off, I then got lower near the ground and hit the test button to fire a second flash. I like the effect, it has that outdoors in the sun stadium look in the helmet. I placed two white boards like at a right angle and bounced the flash off them.

banjon > Day 192 (2/2) - Crimson Sunset, Halifax, NS

I love the red crimson glow. Barb loved the colors as well. :)

banjon > Day 192 (1/2) - AL#13

Tonight was one of those days where everything seemed to be flowing well. I had a few ideas today and a beauty of a sunset to work with.

It started off with a heavy down pour. I tried to get pictures of the yellow finch looking like a wet cat with blotched feathers every where... looks like he had a really bad feather day. He came to the feeder expecting shelter from the heavy rain, but by chance it was one of those storms that the rain was pounding against this side of the building. Every where the poor little fellow hopped, he was being pelted in the head with rain drops. After three good soakers, he decided enough's enough. Off he went. Once the rain calmed he was back, all nicely groomed. :)

So in the meantime, I remembered those circular rain drops on a window shots a few days ago. Thought while it was pouring, the windows were soaked with droplets. Gave it a shot. I had a few that came out pretty cool. Rain Drops in Motion

Later in the day, it didn't look like much of a sky... but it turned into a wall of red. The sky was this huge red blanket, with a tinge of yellow at the bottom. Sunset Photos

After enjoying the sunset, we set up the BBQ and prepared the other items. After the meal, which was awesome (marinated steak strips in Barb's BBQ Sauce and Wine/Olive Oil), there was a sheet of aluminum foil left on the table. I was about to discard it, when I noticed a rainbow pattern created by the starch or steam in the potatoes. So I started taking photos of it. I added the flash, and then saw this cool effect occur. The mixing of flash, with incandescent lights. It gave this nice mellow orange glow, so I bounced the flash off the white board giving some light and shadows.

The results were very cool. The image is pretty much out of the camera, slight adjustment to contrast. Never know what will catch your eye. :)

Barb asked me to add the crimson sunset photo as a 2nd daily shot. 2nd POD

banjon > Day 191 - Blueberries

It's blueberry harvest time, so blueberries are everywhere around Nova Scotia. There are festivals with lots of treats. :) We can buy them by the case in the markets. I never seen so many blueberries. I read that NS is 2nd to Maine for producing berries. Oxford, NS is one of the blueberry headquarters. They have a 20 ft blueberry as you enter the town. Kind of scary looking. :)

I learned when photographing berries.. keep track of where they are at all times.. the little tykes love to wander and it's usually too late when you find one. So after I cleaned up my elbow and camera strap... I resumed working with my flash and snapping some shots.

I bounced the flash towards the left and tried the slow sync method adjusting the shutter speed to stay open longer than the flash sync. I like how the light fell on the front and back, yet the main berry in front remained in focus. I placed a black board as my base, and a white board to the left, which aided the bounce.

banjon > Day 190 - Sunset in Upper LaHave

On the drive home, saw about 20 herons, some loons, thought about trying for a silhouette or two, but opted for the boats in the water. :)

Finally finished up processing the shots of the models and cars. There were a few I was happy with, a good learning exercise. I'll know what to try next time. I took some time on Sunday and mostly did test shots with the flash in manual mode. Nothing really inspiring. :)

banjon > Day 189 - Anticipation

Let's walk on the beach!
Oh, we are SOOO there!

How do you open this door....

When I saw the owner walking her three dogs, and then seeing the dogs all huddled in her truck. LOL... lucky thing there were no passengers. :) It just cracked me up when I saw all three looking forward. They were watching, with great intensity, another young pup frolicing on the beach with a little girl.

They were probably reminiscing of days when they were a pup. :)

Aug 24 2008

The mass bird migrations have begun. Saw some reports of 17,000 shorebirds on the beaches in Grand Pre. I knew I should have read the sightings web site. Lots more on the move. Even hummingbirds... a few people were out whale watching (saw 4 humpbacks) when one of the guests, who had a red baseball cap on, had a hummingbird stop by and buzz his head thinking he was a flower out in the middle of the ocean. LOL..

Hopefully we can swing a trip to Brier Island. Its on the Atlantic migratory path, last year we saw a few thousand birds take off - unreal how the sky blackened with birds. :)
Day 196 - The Field of Three Doors
