banjon > Day 188 (1/2) - Great Blue Heron

We were checking out Feltztown today, when I saw this GBH near the shore. I was able to get within 40ft using the car as a blind. We watched him preen himself for nearly 15-20 minutes. Its the longest we've ever been able to study and admire them. We were at a safe distance, traveling on the road near the shore. He was so busy preening, he didn't seem to notice us. Maybe he was just used to humans around the fishing boats and docks. There was a funny candid moment as he was preening himself, he was so into it, then a sudden gust of wind nearly knocked him over. That was funny see a heron quickly rebound to gain balance.. almost and oops splash moment. :)

Lots of people swimming today.. not sure how warm, or cold the water was, but everyone was enjoying it from the sudden heat spell. We went from near fall weather to stinky sticky stuff in a day. Anything to beat the heat. :)

banjon > Day 187 - Pugwash Lighthouse Sunset

We were heading home and were greeted by this very nice sunset.
I always like how the water turns a light powder blue as dusk turns into night.

banjon > Day 186 - Sunset Beckons

I've been busy tonight processing my stash of photos. I'm about halfway through the 600+ photos I took. I've started adding them to a folder.

For those interested: http://banjon.smugmug.com/gallery/5765850_uBtYo

The exercise was great. I learned a lot about using my flash manually, using reflectors, umbrellas (gotta get one of those), and definitely cannot depend on optical flash when other photogs are around. Need to pick up a SB600 or SB800, now that the SB900's are out prices are dropping. Thats a good thing. :)

No wonder my friend said, "Welcome to you new money pit". hehe But its so great.. :)

banjon > Day 185 - Models and Muscle Cars

Tonight we had an outing with the local photography group. They arranged for several models to pose for us using some muscle cars and racing bikes. It was my first experience working with models. Everyone had a great time, including myself. The models are attending a local community college and use these events to help build their portfolio.

Amazing how fast 3 hours goes by. :) The weather finally held out after two prior reschedules, we were about to call it quits, when we saw the forecast for tonight. Although a bit chilly, the sun really held out and gave us a spectacular sunset to boot! :)

I look forward to the next meetup. Its great to meet other local photographers and get to know the models who are very professional. Finding the right words can be difficult at times, but the models are very understanding and patient. :)

banjon > Day 184 - Chocolate Chip Cookies

I saw the cookie dough the other day and got a hankering to make some. Barb is teaching me how to cook and bake stuff. I made some of my mom's cookies. She'd be impressed that some of the things she told me actually sunk in over the years. hehe

They came out wonderful. I didn't burn any this time. Last time I had a batch of frisbees, or they can be Cookie Monster Ninja throwing stars. hehehe.

banjon > Day 183 - Harvest Moonrise

We were traveling home and were out in the middle of the boonies when we saw the moon rising up over the horizon. It was SO big and orange. Barb called it an August moon or Harvest moon.

I remember chasing one about two years ago, but could never get a clear shot or angle, mostly because you only have a few minutes before its up in the sky. :)

(best viewed at night in dark room - I love the deep purplish blues)

I've added a moon phase photo that shows 11 shots of the moon rising.

banjon > Day 182.1 - Listen.. there is NO WAY they can see us here behind this bush...

After seeing the herons and running from the mosquitoes. We came across these two little raccoons that look very young. There is large boom in raccoon's in the area, and the gov't was letting people know to be aware and not feed them. I always like the look of these little bandits and the Beatles had that catchy tune "Rocky Raccoon". :)

It was my first encounter with Raccoons in the wild. They look soooo cute. Barb was enjoying their cuteness. :) They really were adorable.

banjon > Day 182.2 - Blue Herons at Rest

After checking out the wharf in Wallace,NS, we were heading towards Fox Harbour, when we spotted about 15 to 20 Blue Herons in the marsh. There are 9 herons in this shot. When we were coming back this way after sunset, we saw nearly 30 herons in the sea grass just down from the wharf. It was such a wild site to see. After the setting sun, the moon had not risen yet, so it was too dim for my lens. I'll always remember that seen of all the long necks stretched out anticipating the slightest of movement in the water.

Heading to Fox Harbour, the smell of clams was in the air, and so were the shore birds. We were seeing all kinds of birds. A few bald eagles, hawks, messenger, cormorants, gulls, a few fast white birds (I think they were terns), an osprey, I think the others may have been grouse.

We had no idea there would be this many birds here. Only thing is.. the pests were there in droves. We got bombarded by about 20 or more mosquitoes as they flooded into the car... fresh meat! hehe The horse fly.. or maybe deer or bear fly is more like it, these things were huge and scary looking. Thankfully we had the windows up. :)

Everything seemed bigger there. The dragonflies looks like mini helicopters, about 4 to 5 inches in length. I saw one fly by, it was huge. I guess the eatin is good there.
