banjon > Day 181 - Juvenile Robin

banjon > Day 180 - Kernels From Heaven

This is a composite of three shots of popcorn falling while I clicked the remote. I tried many methods, but ended up with mostly empty backgrounds. Timing on falling popcorn is harder than timing water. You can drop or tossup and try to time when the corn will be in view. The best method was to drop and click.

I tried the air popper to see if it would launch them up. Not a good thing to try. :) Unpopped kernels were flying like mortar shells, and me ducking for cover. One of those Funniest Video moments. Figures the first one to pop out of the popper landed square, dead center on my bare foot. That smarted for a few seconds. Needless to say, my efforts did pay off, I did get 1 and only 1 kernel that popped up about an inch over the popper. Woohoo.. not... :P

After picking up popcorn frags from on the floor, the couch, the cupboards, the plants, the table, and countless unpopped kernels that lay like cluster bombs scattered over the living room. Just when you think you got them all, another one rolls across the floor. I have a feeling these kernels will be popping up over the next several weeks.

I've uploaded some alternate takes with different colors: http://banjon.smugmug.com/gallery/5686199_acx2h#352665164_bm8xA

banjon > Day 179 - Envy

It reminded me of a lady with locks of golden hair, clenching her hand near her lips.

It's been real busy at work, so I tried for some more smoke shots. A little different setup this time, gave me more light on the smoke. I really like the flowing designs and the randomness. The anticipation of capturing some striking and unique is really cool.

banjon > Day 178 - Copper Flower

Busy with work tonight, so I had some of my smoke shots and worked on this one.
I'm not sure what caused the multiple colors, maybe the wood was smoldering. :)

I liked the stripe and the color, the vase is pretty much the color of the smoke. I increased the green and cyan a touch to give more of a patina look, and adjust the color on the flower to look like shiny copper.

To help with the lighting I build a semi smoke box. I placed one white board on the bottom, one on the left about a foot from the smoke (I used to fan the smoke), and a black board in back. The flash is aiming up at about 30 degree to the smoke on the right. The white boards provided light from the bottom and side, while the flash lit the body of the smoke.

banjon > Day 177 - Blue Tulip

Thought I'd try photographing the incense last night now that I got some more foam core boards. The black is excellent, non-reflective, works perfect. It took me a bit to get situated with lighting and flow of smoke.. keep the incense lit.. hehe

I need to find those little triangular incense pellets - they last longer than the sticks. I mostly crumpled up the sticks and lit them up. Bill was right, the smoke is thicker and flows much better and odds of getting something nice go way up.

I've had some nice results, but need more playtime.. I mean experimenting.. Trying to get the billowing smoke into the light is tough. I was adjusting the flash at the end to see how it effects the brightness and clarity of smoke. I really like the results.

Looking forward to trying this again.

Why do they sell different scents of incense?
They seem to all smell the same. hehe

banjon > Day 176 - The Cutting Edge

Tried photographing this little gem we found at the craft store. Feels like glass, but I think its plastic. I think the real thing would be much easier. Anyone want to lend me a diamond that big. :P I will return it.. promise.. hehe.

I aimed two LED's into the gem at different angles allowing for the cool color casts on the right. There were some wicked color combos, that I couldn't capture with the camera. Will maybe need a faster lens.. oh well someday.

I put a few others here, if interested:

Was planning on going to a hot rod shoot, but the rain won again. :(

banjon > Day 175.2 - Neon Flower Uplight

I used a light aimed at the bottom of the straws and longer exposure to create this pastel effect. I like how the straws look a bit metallic.

banjon > Day 175.1 - Neon Straw Flower

Wanted to try these neon color straws we had. I tried different lighting and came up with a few interesting patterns.

I've added a second photo using an uplight to create a pastel metallic look.

Added note: These straws are translucent and only turn solid color when the flash was applied. That was an added surprise. :)

banjon > Day 174 - Calm Before The Storm

This is a shot taken before one of the deluges this past week. The shades of blue really caught my eye.

I love watching the clouds go by. Especially those massive clouds that change shape instantly. My imagination runs wild, usually seeing different objects in the sky.

When we travel, Barb loves to pick out shapes in the clouds. We used to play this with the kids, it helps pass the time. :)
