banjon > Day 173 - Extra Special

This Bitter Beer (not really) from one of the many micro brewery's in Halifax. When ever I visit the pubs, their Porter is what I seek. It's very good.

There are quite a few brewery's around here. It's a Navy town, so there are a lot of pubs.. a lot... I really mean.. a lot. If you ever visit St. John's in New Foundland, bring your drinking hat. They have a lot of pub crawls here and lots of taxi's to drop you and your friends to take you home. Which is a good idea since the Cabaret's close at 4am.
You can go to the local Farmer's Market (first one in North America, started back in 1750) and sample new beers. :)

There are many flavors: Blueberry, Raspberry, Wheat, and a few others. They really like to experiment with the flavors.

The setup was a mirror as the base, a blue water bottle was placed in front of the flash behind the clear plastic box/drawer. I added a light banking off a foam card on the right to help lighten the bottle.

I learned an important lesson when working with water and paper labels - never spray the bottle's label. Doh!

banjon > Day 172.2 - The Northern Star

I like how the bottom of the decanter appeared when the flash went off. It looks like someone walking in the woods at night looking at the north star.

banjon > Day 172.1 - Trapped in a Bottle

This is a very large crystal decanter. I like how the sides appear to be a swirling blue light.

A few years ago, we were given this hand carved, hand painted, wooden mask from a friend in Malaysia. I really like the colors and detail in the mask. When I was taking shots of the decanter, just for fun I thought I'd try to see if I could see something through the glass. :)

To create the effect of a Genie in the bottle, I placed the mask about a foot behind the decanter, giving the illusion of it actually being inside the bottle. :)

banjon > Day 171 - Everybody Hurts Sometimes

When I saw this dying flower, it reminded me of a song.

This is one of our favorite songs and one I love to play.

"When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

banjon > Day 170 - The Emergency Response Team

B-52's! Woohoo! Ever since Barb introduced them to me back in Montreal, I fell in love with them. They are soooOOOOooOOOoo great! After 5 or 6 shots of these, you really feel like you're flying. hehe

For those who've never mixed one, here are the ingredients:
In a shot glass, fill half with Kahlua (coffee),
then the other half with Baileys (chocolate),
then top it off with a smidgen of Grand Marnier (orange).
The trick is to pour them slowly into a shot glass using the backside of a spoon. The spoon should be touching the opposite side of the shot glass when pouring each ingredient.
The spoon keeps them from mixing, so you get three stacked layers.
Then bottoms up! :)

I made another concoction of two shots into a tumbler, and fill the rest with milk.
Add an ice cube or two... yummy. :)

The setup is a semi-clear white plastic drawer. I sprayed water on the front and back, giving it a wet look. I placed a black tarp behind the drawer and the flash about 2 feet behind the drawer. This turned the white plastic into an metalish look. I love the handle - it really added something. I also placed a white foam board to the left and a front flash about 6 feet away. Finally, I added some B52 text.

There are some things I picked up along the way that I want to try -
off to the art store I go... hehe

banjon > Day 169 - Afternoon Deluge

Everyone got pummeled by a massive down pour today. Its been raining for 3 days. ugh. Thankfully on and off with some breaks of fog here and there.

The deluge lasted for almost a half hour, dumping more and more water. I was trying to help the flowers survive the huge droplets. This flower was bending left and right, as the rain was relentlessly hitting it with huge droplets.

Barb said she noticed the birds all high-tailing out of the area, no wonder. :) Lightning and a Heavy Rain... enough to make anyone run for cover.

The rain was warm, like bath water. I didn't mind getting my feet and legs soaked. I felt like a kid again, out in the puddles (but on the porch). I kept the camera close at hand, when I noticed these sprays of water bursting when a droplet collided with a flower.

banjon > Day 168 - Slippery Slope

I worked on a setup tonight that finally worked as planned. :) I got some really nice shots, capturing different phases of lighting. I need better materials to make the setup sturdier. I'll post a gallery of other ice shots soon.

This was a ice cube sliding across a glass tray. I positioned the tray to create a make-shift light box. Added some food coloring and some ice. I used tracing paper to help diffuse the flash. I really enjoyed the lighting setup. It's fun to create.

banjon > Day 167 - Gotcha!

It was a busy house cleaning day. Lots of rain. :(

I did get to watch this Garden Orb spider build a huge web, must be more than a foot wide. I was amazed at the accuracy, and quickness to build the web. In about 10 minutes he constructed the web. It knew the locale - within a few minutes of completion, I think just enough for a small breather, pluck goes the web and it snagged a small insect. It was there like Flynn.

Maybe flying insects are not the smartest. We used to have a burrowing Tarantula in PA where we feed it crickets. The crickets would actually walk over the spider, frolic right in front of his face, then snap - no more cricket. :) How many times we'd release a cricket, and within two seconds, they walk right to the spider.

banjon > Day 166 - Glowing Blue Ice

I tried a few different things tonight and liked this one the best. I learned a lot with setting up off camera flash like banking, side lighting, and changing the flash brightness levels according to distance from subject.

Yesterday's I used red food coloring to tint the ice.
Tonight's I used a blue recycling bag as the bottom mat, and a black background. I used the bag to act like a blue gel. I set the flash to the lowest focal point, about a foot away from the left side and reduced it to 1/32. I placed about 5 ice cubes in a pie dish.

The cubes melt quick so its good to have them in a container. :)
I love the blue the recycling bag gave off and the detail in the ice.
If I only had a macro, ice macro would be next. I love the patterns in the ice.

I was going to try to do the crushed ice, but I should have crushed it earlier in the night. :P I got yelled at. Me such a bad boy. hehe
