banjon > Day 80 - Candlelight Refraction

A nice little surprise occurred while lighting a candle near a DVD.

It reminds me of the old cartoon drawings of candles showing light.

banjon > Day 79 - Grackle Searching for Insects

I was lucky to watch three Grackles moving up and down the water banks, looking for little water insects. I only thought the blue portion of their head shimmered, but it appears they are like the Starlings. The darker feathers give off a semi-gold, mauve, crimson, and purple when the sun hits them just right.

I love the expression on this shot. This was taken by the newly fortified beaver dam. The beavers were busy! Two more huts and the dam grew another foot taller. I think the birds love the new expansion. :)

(Busy day at work, photo was taken on Saturday - There were lots of birds here, but the beavers must of been napping)

Happy Cinco De Mayo.

banjon > Day 78 - Blue Beach

Located near Hantsport, NS. This area sees some of the highest tides in the world. Where I took this photo from, at high tide I would be underwater. I think the highest level recorded was a little over 59 feet, 16.5 meters. It may break records this year with the record snow falls.

Walking this beach you must take several precautions and always be aware of the tide schedules. They are law. Always plan an escape route and only travel what you can. We walk no more than 45 minutes out to allow us time to get back. There is a about 2.5 hour safe time where people can comb the beaches for rocks, semi-precious gems, fossils, sometimes dinosaur bones appear. All these items are being released from sedimentary layers that are hundreds of million years old. The layers here are horizontal, meaning they pre-date the Ice age.

So when you walk the beach, always keep and eye open, you never know what you'll find.

One of the largest dinosaur bones was unearthed here, something like 2 feet in diameter (a few years ago). Recently, some high schools students found an upper and lower jaw bone perfectly intact. A few kilometers south of here in Avon Port, there are dinosaur tracks and amphibian tail trails. A major find, shows the transition from water to land. Across the bay, in Parsboro, is where they found the oldest skeleton of a mouse, they said this little mouse, became the grandparent for dinosaurs.

Its amazing how peaceful this place is. So quiet. Hard to imagine the force of the water that is only 1 kilometer from us. Time and distance are very deceiving. When we first visited we knew of the tides, but didn't know about the other dangers. The red smooth mud can become hard to navigate, slippery like butter. The area near the water, you never even attempt.

Some foolhardy gentlemen decided to venture out there last year, not realizing, its wet and mushy, and he sank to his waist. There is not enough time for rescue crews to save him. When the tide started to come in, he would be under 40 or more feet of water in about 2.5 hours. He didn't stand a chance. They never found him.

Falling trees and landslides are another danger. You always walk about 50 feet out from the cliffs. Last year, a week after we walked the beach, a couple were crushed by falling trees (from the 30-60 ft cliffs).

For all its dangers, you can really learn a lot from the beach. There are fault lines that run through it. You can see petrified mud from millions of years ago. A local told us they were using these funny looking rocks for door stops, here it turned out they were prehistoric tree trunks. They recently found more stone trees.

That is so cool. Next time we want to check out Avon Port for the Dinosaur tracks. I guess this area was a large dino and amphibian highway at one time.

banjon > Day 77 - Shipwrecked

I couldn't wait to go outside today - nearly 18C/68F! woohoo!

I was watching some ducks/geese, not sure the name yet - very unique heads (beak extends to the top of their head). Then decided to take some beach shots. I noticed the wood sticking out in the water, thought it was an old dock.

When I approached it - thats when I saw the keel and the U shape of the hull. The timbers are definitely from the mid-1800's. The iron spikes and forms all have pits, so the metal was forged by hand.

I'm going to research if this shipwreck was reported, seems the winter storms redefined the beach here and may have revealed this hidden beauty. I wanted to get closer but the tide was coming in. I got some closeups of the textures and such. Definitely want to go back again.

Nova Scotia is known for shipwrecks (150 documented wrecks so far, researchers are estimating nearly 10,000 remain off the shores of Eastern Nova Scotia). There is one little island east of here, called Sable Island, thats been responsible for a large amount of the wrecks. The island is also noted for having wild horses as well.

This is my 2nd shipwreck I came across. This one is in much better shape. I would say the width is about 20 feet from side to side. The keel that remains extends into the water about 30 feet. I think there may be more buried there.

I also started to see flowers and buds. :)

banjon > Day 76 - Trying to Blend In

Oops forgot to give a description. :)

Its a clear glass marble on top of green glass beads. The green from the glass is shining through the marble.

I used a 250w halogen - man them things are warm. I felt like I was in a sauna. :)

I found the sweet spot (where the marble turned green) by trying different angles. I liked this one the best. I did try other colors, blue looked neat, but didn't light up like the clear glass one did.

Thanks for all the comments. :)

banjon > 75.2 - DVD meet Soap, Soap meet DVD

Today I added some soap to the mix.

There were a group of bubbles between the two DVDs.
As I was taking the shot, the strobe must of caught some of the bubbles exploding.

:) This stuff is so wild..
banjon > Day 75.1 - Purple Haze

Almost missed this sunset. Thankfully the shades were glowing orange. I thought it was still cloudy, murky skies. I guess the sun was able to break through for a stunning sunset. A short while after, the sky went pink.

Be sure to check out the DVD and Soap color shot on 75.2 - Its amazing!

banjon > Day 74 - Rainbow Explosion

I wasn't able to get a shot together last night - was very exhausted and not feeling well. Got lots of sleep and feel somewhat better today.

I uploaded another photo from the set of the previous night.
I love the flowing rainbow.
