banjon > Day 264 - Family of Crow

Watching crows head to roost can be quite entertaining. A few nights ago, there must of been 5 or 6 groups, with 3 crows to a group. The common m.o. appears to be two lookouts and one thief, which each takes a turn at.

I've learned they can be quite clever and after reading some articles found they are one of the smartest birds and in doing can be very crafty.

They are monogamous, mating for life. They are very family orientated and are very social. They seem to be affectionate to one another, not just in mating season. The top two crows are partners, and the lower must be a sibling. Just moments before the young one arrived, the crow on the left rubbed his/her forehead along the back of the others neck and made an effort to get closer. Then the kid arrives landing on a branch in the same tree, causing the small tree to sway a bit. If they could talk it would probably be something like, "I'm home!". Parents response, "Ya Ya.. We KNOW".

You can tell the bottom one was younger. He was fidgety. Turn directions, looking around, you know like a little kid. Meanwhile, the parents were just sitting there enjoying the sunset. A few minutes after this photo, the youngin splits causing the tree to sway a bit, making the parents almost lose balance on the perch. :) I could only imagine what they were thinking... hehe

I noticed when they first arrived they were on separate trees, but then they all gathered on one tree. I've noticed this with Eagles as well. I wonder if they use it as an early warning system, hair trigger response, in case one of them spot something. They can attack or flee without being heard. Leaving no one behind.

I also read that they can be very crafty and figure out how to open or get at food. They work in pairs too, its been seen that one crow would hold the door open while the others would pillage the food. Seagulls are Crows nemesis, but they aren't the brightest in the bunch. Anything that requires a conscious effort seagulls will move onto something else less challenging. Not the crow. If there is a bounty to be had, they are determined to get it.

My favorite thing to watch is a crow stealing food from a seagull. They side step with short hops in, do a quick peck, side step back out. They can steal a good portion of the food that way, until the seagull figures out what going on then chases the crow. hehe A few minutes later, the crow is back again and the dance begins again. :)

Lastly, I never thought of the crow as being an aggressor. After seeing them take on eagles, hawks, and owls, they can pretty much hold their own for a while any way.

banjon > Day 262 - DVD and H20

The past two weeks at work have been very hectic. Timing for a new software release can test everyone's patience. Trying to be creative after 12 hours of mind numbing work can be tough.

So to help combat the stress levels at work, I started skimming through my recent dailies. I stumbled across some photos I did mixing water and DVDs. I forgot I was putting together a gallery, so I began processing the remaining photos for the gallery.

I always like creating these abstract images. Something in them comforts me. Maybe its the light, the lines, the colors. All I know is I really enjoy making them. Very relaxing work.

banjon > Day 260 - KaleidoDVD

Have you ever wondered what a DVD would look like through a prism? I have. :)

A few months ago we picked up one of these small glass prisms. I tried a few things, but never thought of using some DVD/CDs at the time. Tonight I started to play a bit and then the prism came to life with such many different vivid color combinations. Its one of those experiments, the more you work it, the more you find or will 'accidentally' happen.

This was one of those 'accidents' :)

banjon > Day 259 - Big Lake Twilight

Taken near McGrath's Cove a few miles northeast of Peggy's Cove. The highway that leads from Halifax to Peggy's Cove and then to the Head of St Margaret's Bay has many small and large lakes, inlets, and coves with a few lobster boats here and there.

All along this road you catch glimpses of the ocean or bay depending on which way you head back to Halifax. I love rolling down the windows, even in winter, just to smell the fresh sea air. You do have to watch for sea mist (black ice) on windy cold days.

I always love the information sign as you leave Peggy's Cove:

 <== Halifax ==>

Its the same distance no matter which direction you choose. What they don't tell you is, take the road to the left if you want the straight and narrow, head to the right if you are up for some thrill seeking curves and hills. Great family fun!

We learned quickly, when you see these cute checkerboard signs take heed of the posted speed. If it states 40KPH, DO NOT GO 1KPH over that limit. I think they must of actually measured the speed at which two of the four wheels will lift off the ground on these hairpin turns. You learn quick after a few incidents where you wipe the sweat from your brow, and just about blurt, Holy S.. and you are into the next turn. Its a great driving experience, not so fun in the fog. Funny thing is people who live in this area drive at break neck speeds (even when its snowing!). They probably would make good Formula-1 drivers.

banjon > Day 258 - Snowy Owl

I heard of some owls in the area, so I traveled to Hartlen Point this afternoon. I was walking along the cobble beach checking out the coral and soft shell crabs stranded from low tide and watching the tide come in smashing huge waves on the shore of Devil's Island.

I was just about ready to head back when I noticed what looked like a new piece of driftwood on the beach. Something out of place from the last time I was here a few months ago (I have a photographic memory that makes me notice this stuff). I was about 1000 feet away, so I zoomed in the best I could, and then I saw it move, adjusting its wings. My mouth dropped! :)

It took me a while to work my way through the bushes and briers to get within 50 feet. The owl knew I was there and allowed me to continue observing for about a half hour. He was really amazing to watch. Then I heard some dogs barking in the background, off he went to some pine trees in the distance.

I spoke to a birder in the area and he said everyone is excited because there are going to be a lot of owls headed South this year. It was a very successful breeding year and there are hundreds headed our way from the Arctic.

This owl is most likely a male, as it's been reported that most young males have already begun heading South. So we should start to see more in the upcoming weeks. He said there are already two or three in the area now, with more expected soon.

banjon > Day 257 - Wintery Reflection

Snow lined trees reflect in the water at Kearney Lake.

I always look for reflections when I'm walking near water. You never know what you will find.

I like the black and white version, but the color version had a soft feel. color version

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the US. :)
