banjon > Day 22 - Windy Day at Prospect Bay

Well, weatherman called for snow, then it turned to torrential rain, first with the deluges, then with near hurricane winds. I didn't hear any hurricane warnings!!! The wind gusts were hitting 80MPH or more last night. The windows were bouncing and doors were shaking.

So I expected more of the same today. Nope! Remember that saying, don't like the weather wait 10 minutes. Well, it was sunny and blue skies with 40mph winds. I knew where I was headed! Prospect Bay.

The bay is one of the farthest tips into the Atlantic Ocean and it sees a lot of wave action. These waves are so unpredictable, I don't think surfers even bother with this area. As you can see, this wave is viewed from upon a hilltop - the average spray heights today had to be in the 50 to 60 ft range when they smashed into the granite rocks. I bet the town is grateful for those granite rocks, they act as a natural break water.

Notice the white rock how smooth it is. This is the same type of rock formations found at Peggys Cove, which about 20 miles south from here.

The wind was so strong and bitterly cold - I could only take small exposures for roughly 15 minutes at a time. I still feel the chill in my bones. I had to hold the tripod with one hand, trying to keep my foot near one of the legs, and I left the camera strapped around my neck. For a few moments, the wind was so strong, I had to turn around to breathe. :)

I had so many awesome shots today! The sun was battling a massive snow storm over the Atlantic. Half the sky was dark grey and dark blue, the other was all puffy white and powder blue. When the Sun was over taken by the thick dark clouds, within moments the temp dropped roughly 10 or more degrees - you could actually feel the blast of cold air. Next thing I know, ice pellets were stinging me in the face, and snow - the sky was full of snow. Thick white puffy snow. That lasted for about an hour, then it was all gone. The sun came out and showcased some awesome rays of light which cast spot lights on the rocks and lit up the ocean. Pretty cool.

I could have stayed there all day! I ran out of space on the memory card and batteries died. :(
When it gets very cold I notice the camera starts to act a bit odd. Oh well.. next time. I keep telling Barb we should get a house down there. :)

PS ... and Barb says NO WAY!!! (signed Barb :).

banjon > Day 21 - Rainy and Fog-ridden Weekend Blues

Its raining like cats and dogs, plus a few hamsters, or anything else that's worthy.

Let's see there rain, plenty of it, fog, so thick you can't see your neighbors house, yup must be the weekend. Monday's forecast - Bright and Sunny! I think Mother Nature loves to mess with our heads. At least it's not snow! They were calling for 50cm(20in).

Anyway, I tried to get out and make the best of the conditions. Sometimes the rain and fog offer for some nice photos if you get there at the right moment. Greens can become very vibrant, if you can find some. Usually lichens come alive during rain and fog - think of the fog as a ultraviolet light. Also, these red picker bushes become vibrant red during the winter - I don't know what they are called, but you see fields of fire engine red - with the snow it looks really nice.

I decided to check out Peggy's Cove today - with the incoming tide, fog and rain - woohoo! I took one of the back roads and found this old abandoned house on one of the lakes. Looks like it was recently abandoned a few years ago. So sad to see this happen. I always wonder what happened that caused them to leave such a beautiful location.

banjon > Day 20 - BMW

Today was a nice sunny day. Blue skies. Our son asked us to pick him up from work today. He works at BMW and gets to drive some very nice cars. So while I was waiting for him, I've never really taken any photos of cars before. So I decided to take some shots of some Mini's, the Z4, and newest car - the M3.

He loves cars, both driving and working on them. Same as me - I used to have a 1988 Monte Carlo SS - I really miss that car, it was great to drive and surprisingly pretty good for a GM. However, it does not compare to the M3. The car is super fast - Dan said they had it hit 200km in 5 seconds. The speedometer goes to 380k/m... :) I'll try getting a better photo of the dash next time, I missed the last numbers (steering wheel got in the way). I would love to own one of these beauty's - I'm just a $100K short...

Funny thing, he said they just got the car on the lot, the first customer to drive the car, said "I want it - sold". It didn't even last a day.

banjon > Day 19 - Night Light

I always liked the lines of the metal roof and the shape of these lights.
I also love taking photos at night... usually in well lit and secluded areas.
Something about a shopping center with no cars only vast empty space and lights.

banjon > Day 18 - Freezing Rain / Pluie glacee

We were woken up to the sounds of window scrapers nearly breaking, and lots of cussing trying to get that ice off the windows of their cars. Our son told us there were a few instances were people slid through intersection stop signs/red lights because they didn't realize how bad it was.

As the day went on, more and more ice. Everything was coated. It looked very pretty but, to venture out was near impossible. Looking out the back window we see the forest of ice. Trees clanking in the wind and every now and then you'd hear ice chunks hitting the ground.

By the end of the day, the sun was trying to come out, but the clouds were too thick. However, it did light the clouds up to act as a diffuser which made everything glow white. It was really cool to see. Then the fog... moments after sunset, you couldn't see anything. You soon learn where the phrase "Thick as Pea Soup" comes from.

Thankfully the rain soon stopped and the temps warmed. It didn't take long for all the pretty ice to disappear. I was glad I took the time to take some photos. :)

banjon > Day 17 - Bubblicious

I always wanted to try that soap thing. So I got out the dove and some water and splashed away. Trying different things, some looked cool, but what I found I need a bigger light. :) Down to basement I go looking for our 500w suckers - that ought to do it next time.

I started to get some cool psychedelic images. I really love the colors and patterns.
Will definitely try this again.

banjon > Day 16.1 - Salmon with Cherry Glaze Tonight

We had some North Atlantic salmon and the last of the Digby scallops (see 16.2 - http://banjon.smugmug.com/gallery/4356946_mQ7BB#261738169). If you ever visit the Maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, or Labrador/New Foundland) in Canada, be sure to get the fresh salmon and Digby scallops. Digby scallops are the largest I've ever seen - some are larger than hockey pucks. (Not a bad price either, usually $8/lb and $6/lb for Salmon)

We ran out of orange juice and white wine to make the cherry glaze. So we improvised and came up with a keeper - Brown Sugar + Red Merlot Wine + Grenadine (Cherry flavor). So we'll have salmon for lunch tomorrow.

So busy at work during the week, it gets hard to be creative. :)

Recipe: Crack pepper over salmon, pour juice of a 1 or 2 lemons over it (depending on size of salmon), and broil for about 20 minutes. Add glaze and broil for 5 to 10 min, depending how crispy you want it. (This was almost 3 lbs, so it takes about 30 min because its more than and inch thick on the ends). Serve over rice if you want.

banjon > Day 16.2 - Golden Brown Digby Scallops

If you like seafood - these taste so good.. :) We fired up the Grand Marnier tonight... I need more work on my flame capturing. :) I will just have to keep trying until I get it right. Time for a new bottle... hehe

banjon > Day 15 - Grand Marnier Night

Tonight we had scallops lightly browned in some butter and garlic, then flambéed in Grand Marnier. Of course I had to test the Grand Marnier to make sure it was still good. :) After a few testing samples, we were ready to fire it up. However, my timing was off and couldn't get the flame correctly on camera. Maybe tomorrow as there are still some scallops left over.

If you have never tried Grand Marnier, it has a slight orange flavor. Very nice taste once it caramelizes over the scallops. :)

I wanted to line up some B52's, but "someone" drank all the Bailey's Irish Creme.... hehe I swear it wasn't me, nope! >:P These are fun to make and fun to drink. I was making B52 milk shakes... yummy yummy.
