banjon > Day 248 - Red Gloves

A pair of boxing gloves hanging on the wall at the gym.

banjon > Day 247 - Etched With Red

I always like the feel of etched glass. The smooth surface bordering the rough. I had an idea about these glass candle vases, if I could get them to illuminate. I tried candles at first, but I didn't like the small glow. Tried glass beads, and a few others.

Then while testing some bounce shots, to see how it would light the flower, the smooth surface was at just the correct angle to reflect the bounce card into the lens. So I tried different angles until I got the entire smooth surface to illuminate.

Setup includes a black board in back, white board on right, flash aimed low to the right, which allows for side lighting to fall onto the glass and flower. Different lens heights produce different results.

Post was only changing white balance to fluorescent, a few minor touch ups.

banjon > Day 246 - Heres the wind up....

Oouuf!

A group of local photographers gathered at a boxing club called Palooka's in Halifax. The guys were great. It was a whole new experience for a lot of us. The conditions were rough, the facility was great, but the lighting was a bit harsh.

It was a great night out. Hope to do it again sometime soon.

banjon > Day 244 (2/2) - Longing

The fog settled in for a few days making everything a bit gloomy. However, the sun did succeed in breaking through a few times only to be darkened once again.

As I visited Conrad Beach, there were a few others out today. Visibility was about 50ft, or less. This gentleman was about 30-40 feet away. When I walked onto the beach, the waves were crashing, but they were subdued by the fog. I felt I was in a bubble as I stood in the middle of the beach and saw nothing but white. I saw a couple sitting and reading on one of the dunes, they had a large yellow umbrella that only appeared as I came closer. When I left the beach, my hair was soaked. The ocean breeze was so warm, I didn't want to leave.

While out and about in the fog, I've noticed the brightness of the fog depends on its thickness. There were several times during the day when the fog was very well lit. The whole sky was one huge white reflector/diffuser that really saturated the colors of the grasses and trees.

While driving, I saw many different shades of light from dark gray, to gloomy, to very bright white, to a heavenly glow that felt surreal, and even a yellowish white as the sun began to break through.

I've heard you can get a sunburn in fog under the right conditions. During midday, the UV rays still can reach you, just as if there was no fog. It all depends on how saturated the fog cloud is. Think of swimming and how fast your nose gets a sunburn.

As I finally reached Fisherman's Reserve, I noticed a blue streak in the fog. No way! Blue sky! In less than 5 minutes, whoosh... all the fog was gone. I was glad I got out when I did. :)

banjon > Day 244 (1/2) - Lost In Time

An old dory slowly withers away in the thick fog in West Lawrencetown. I can imagine the tons of cod it hauled in its day.

Since the cod stocks were nearly depleted by commercial trawlers, the small local fishermen had to abide by a 10-year moratorium on cod. This really hurt the Maritimes as many families had to pursue other means of employment or move away and leave everything behind. Governments can be cruel, allowing the commercial fisheries to continue fishing (unofficially looking the other way), meanwhile, the small guy thinks everyone is playing fair only to get shafted once again. The cod stocks were suppose to replenish, but now every one fears they may be lost forever due to some greedy politicians.

banjon > Day 243 - Solace

A thing about fog when it settles in, just about all sound disappears. Even crashing waves become almost muted and Lighthouses cry out all along the shoreline. A dog barks in the distance. Even the crows take a break.

When it's this thick, visibility is about 20 feet. It can get so thick, the road disappears in front of you (which is a bit freaky). Everything is saturated and dripping. Hair is no match for fog, only a few moments and your hair will look like you just got out of the shower.

Although I heard a few loons, I just couldn't see them. When I thought it was lifting, I saw a bunch of sailboats go by. Must have been a training session.

I love to sit near the ocean when the fog rolls in. A very warm breeze, touched by cool crisp whisps of air coming off the water. It was in the mid-60's (15C) today with a very slight wind. The solace of heavy fog at the ocean can make you fall asleep in a few moments.

banjon > Day 242 - The Green Gourdin

I liked the nodules on this green gourd, so I thought about trying a closeup using the magnifying glasses.

banjon > Day 241 - Gourde and Basket

I thought I'd try some different angles using the gourds.
The basket really blended with this pumpkin shaped gourde,
so I tried a few photos.

The setup was a black board in back, two white boards (on left and right), flash banked to left.
I placed a yellow gourde near the flash to help add a bit of yellow cast.

banjon > Day 240 - Gourds

We saw some nice gourds at the local farmer market.
I love the textures and bumps. :)
