banjon > Day 239 - Mother and Daughter

We had two visits today from the White Tail Doe and her two, make that three offspring. I think she found an orphaned young buck in her journeys. They hung around for about 20 minutes, checking for flowers and shrubs.

She really keeps an eye on young ones. It's funny how the young are oblivious to their environment. She does teach them to watch and listen. I even saw her break down some food into smaller pieces so the little one can share as well.

I guess it doesn't matter the species, we all have the same basic instincts.

We really enjoyed their visit today.

banjon > Day 238 - Freeing The Music

This started out with me playing with my little LED laser pointer. Amazing how far that beam of light will travel. I was banking it off objects, and some glass squares when I had a few ideas pop into my head. It started out holding a pill bottle, which really glowed red. Then I tried different objects, and tried a CD. I liked the look on the hand and the animated digital notes flying out of the CD.

The setup used my timer, setting the focus at arms length, guessing where the lens and autofocus might be looking. After several attempts, I had a reasonable work area. I then would set the timer, hit the trigger to see it focus, get set and paint my hand, fingers, arm, and underneath the CD using the LED pointer. All within 10 seconds. Time really moves fast. I experimented with different apertures and ISO to help saturate my hand, but not over saturate.

banjon > Day 237 - Duck Dance

A brown duck doing a splash dance for a small audience of another brown duck and some American Widgens.

I love the sounds the Widgens make. Sort of like a little flute sound, as compared to the QUACK! I think this duck watched too many River Dance shows. hehe

banjon > Day 236 - Low Tide and a pair of Lesser Yellowlegs

Right on time... the November gales have started. Temperatures dropped below 0C/32F and winds have been steady averaging 30-50mph. This is the type of wind that bites to the bone. The birds hate it, surfers love it. I see so many get stuck in flight and turn around to avoid stalling in mid-air. Not just little birds, gulls and crows find it difficult and often end up flying low to the ground.

Traveling to Three Fathom Harbour today, I was surprised to see a few Lesser Yellowlegs still hanging around the area. This was taken at low tide, when the birds try to get a fresh catch that gets trapped in the rocks due to low flowing waters.

The winds have been relentless, windchills around 16F/-8C. I dug out my winter jacket yesterday, the wind was really kicking it up by the water. Even the birds were hiding out in tiny coves away from the strong winds.

banjon > Day 235 - Orange Decay

Using the 7x magnifying lenses. Searching for some closeup items. :)

banjon > Day 234 - Decay

I was looking for some replacement nose pieces for my glasses, because they are made so cheap these days. I stumbled across the magnifying eyeglass section. Saw these glasses that were 3.5x magnification. Hmm.. for $15, I can take the two lenses and I would get 7x magnification. Worth a shot.

After a few tests and finding the right placement it worked. I held the lens in place while setting the timer, and camera mounted on the tripod. It tricky to hold the glasses in place. Some tape will do the trick next time.

Nova had a cool show on Fractals showing how nature can be represented by mathematical formulas. The veining patterns in leaves were some of the items studied, along with trees and how a forest expands. Amazing stuff. I always liked fractal drawings since I first saw a fractal generator in '85 taking about 4 hours on my XT to generate one mountain scene in low-res (of course). :)

banjon > Day 233 - Loading Containers

A large container ship waits while being loaded with large (40ft) shipping containers at one of Halifax's many terminals. Destination... somewhere in the world. I am still amazed at the height of these ships and the cranes that load them. The long shore men move containers so fast, what seems to be a blink of the eye, they are loaded and heading out to sea.

I saw a large car carrier unload one day. It was amazing to see the stern of ship transform into a four lane ramp. If you think containers move fast, when you see Audi's, BMW's, and others rolling off the ship by the hundreds, possible thousand or more, you are left in awe thinking, can we really build something that huge! :)

Notice the white van on the loading dock. :)

banjon > Day 232 - Sambro Light

A cormorant (or gannet) flies towards the unmanned lighthouse.

This is the oldest known lighthouse in North America, still in operation.
It just celebrated its 250th anniversary.

I was hoping to take a trip around with a local fisherman, since its about 3 miles offshore. During the celebrations, they offered discounted charter for $10/person! The weather didn't cooperate that day, it was cloudy, foggy, and poured just about all day. I was bummed I couldn't make the trip.

Since the island is unmanned now, lots of birds call it home. Gannets, Cormorants, and others.

banjon > Day 231 (2/2) - Twins

A pair of fawns that visit us every now and then (under Mom's supervision).
Mostly to do a pass through, and eat any flowers they find.
I recently found deer love roses and rose hips, which are full of vitamins for even us.
I guess as long as the pesticides aren't used.
