While walking on the beach, what I thought was an old wooden dock, turned out to be quite a surprise.

banjon > Intact Iron Beam Knee

Used to strengthen the ships were introduced in 1810.
The vertical timbers are English Oak, and the keel is most likely Elm.
There may still be some outside planking.

Looks to be a ship that may had Guns at one time, do to the width or breadth of the hull, about 20-25 feet across. The length of the keel looks to be about 50 or 60 feet long.

A sketch explaining the iron knees - http://home.att.net/~shipmodelfaq/ResearchNotes/smf-RN-Garboards01.jpg

The ship may look something like: http://home.gci.net/~stall/syr.htm

Many existing ships were fitted with these iron knees - so this ship may date from 1750-1830.

Will be interesting to find out.
