banjon > DPC - Piping Plover Chicks (endangered species).

There were three Piping Plover chicks born on Conrad Beach about two weeks ago. They are still flightless and so very vulnerable. There is no sign of an adult. Local birders and park wardens are trying to keep them protected as they are an endangered species. There are less than 30 pairs of adult Piping Plovers remaining in Nova Scotia. Conrad Beach is a huge beach stretching about 2 or 3 kms long. A section of about 1/2 a km. has been cordoned off where the nest is. Surprisingly, this has met with mixed results from the public (mostly dog owners). There have been a few volunteers trying to get the message out, but some people have the attitude of 'So what, who cares'. One local birder had to chase people from playing volleyball right where the nest was in the well-marked area. The other night someone tried burning the signs and setup a bonfire in the middle of the nesting grounds. Another fear is people letting their dogs run wild on the beach chasing shorebirds when they really should be leashed. Explaining why your dog should not chase the birds, has mostly met with responses as "'F' off, I'll do what I want". The wardens said the whole issue is a political hotbed. I find it ironic when people who say they love animals will not tolerate being denied a small patch of beach for 2 to 4 weeks until the chicks are able to take flight.

banjon > Day 365 - Happy Birthday!

We're celebrating a few things today.

First off, (drum roll) its my birthday.
Second, the Canadian and US taxes are done!
Last but not least, the daily photo challenge for 2008.
What a day and what a year!

Barb and I wanted to express a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took the time to comment on our photos.
We really appreciated your comments, stars, and all the excellent advice. We really learned a lot.

The daily photos has been quite a challenge. I would recommend it to anybody looking to improve their skills.
I've seen my skills improve tremendously since embarking on this journey.

I gained a great respect for all photographers on SmugMug-- you all make it look so easy. :)

Looking forward to the next round. :)

banjon > Day 364 - Glass

Trying a different bounce method. I really like what it did to the glass.

banjon > Day 363 - Descending into the lair of the Unknown

I was taking photos of this crystal candle glass when this idea of shining the LED red laser onto it's rims and outer edges. I set a longer exposure to pickup the color from the laser pen. When I saw this image, it instantly reminded me of a video game where the player descends through an opening into a lair of some huge beast (aka dragon) :)

banjon > Day 362 - Lemonata

The only soft drink I like to treat myself to every now and then.

Setup: Blue dishpan behind the bottle, fill the bottle with water then use a pitcher to pour into the spout. Make sure the pitcher is white or clear, it will cast colors. Its in an aluminum sink, so that adds as a foil reflector on all three sides and bottom. Out cabinets and backsplash are white, so I bounce the flash off the backsplash and underside of the cabinets to add light from above. I use a 1/8 flash setting and position the flash about the start of the dish pan - just beyond the edge (towards the back splash), this way the flash wont light the dish pan but will bounce the light very well. You won't get any glare either, but you never know what water droplets will reflect. Keep a towel handy for around the sink, yourself, and any spray back onto the lens (it happens, so don't get too close). Then take about 200 photos. :)

banjon > Day 361 - Red Cord

Experiment with shiny cording. The lighting angles really brought out the lines of the cording.

Setup: silver shiny cording, halogen lighting from the right, flash on the left with red tissue paper.

banjon > Day 360 - Blue Comb

I liked the colors of the old comb.

setup: Incandescent lighting on back wall, flash directed upward.

banjon > Day 359 - An Old Childhood Friend

Melanie came across this chair at an antique shop a few years back. The child's chair is very old, very sturdy, and very well built, yet its weighs almost nothing. The craftsmanship of today, just can't compare. Amazing.
