banjon > Day 315 (1/2) - Sunset Rain

Today I saw a beautiful unexpected sunset. Why? It was pouring rain, high winds, snow clouds were moving in (the dark ones), and pretty much cloudy and foggy all day. Temps were up in the 4C/38F in February. This is odd because in less than 12 hours, the temp dropped to -12C/8F, with -22C/-10F windchills.

I was watching the rain trying to melt the snow, when I saw an orange glow on the windowsill. I ran to the porch to see what was going on. I saw the sun breaking through the snow clouds.

As I was about to tell Barb to come and check out the sunset, I heard the rain pounding the window. That's when I saw the sunset through the rain soaked window.

Here's what the sunset looked like from the porch - something you don't see that often, the sun splitting in half by the storm clouds. here

banjon > Day 315 (2/2) - Splitting The Sun

After I ran to the porch to take photos of the sun breaking through dark snow clouds (just a few moments earlier), I saw the sun split in half and shine a pillar into the sky. I felt I was watching a lighting show at one heck of a concert.

Now, something I never thought could ever happen. I just thought you cannot mix the two. I heard of sun showers, but never torrential downpour sunsets. It was raining cats and dogs, yet in the distance was this beautiful spectacle taking place. I was in awe.

banjon > Day 314 (1/2) - Bald Eagle

Today I went to Sheffield Mills Nova Scotia where local chicken farmers work in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Wild Life and Gaming Commission to preserve Bald Eagles. The program was started in the 1960s when the eagles were near extinction. Now Nova Scotia has the largest concentration of Bald Eagles in northeastern North America with close to 1,000 Bald Eagles and well over 200 nests.

In the 1990s, 40 eaglettes were donated to the state of Massachusetts where their numbers were depleted due to DDT. A few years later, they had their first eagle nest in 80 years.

For approximately 3 weeks in January and February, the town of Sheffield Mills informally hosts Bald Eagle viewing. This year marks the 18th year they have drawn thousands of people who line the roads in designated areas to see this spectacular sight. Every caution is made to ensure the eagles are not disturbed. I spoke to a few other birders who were doing head counts. Today there were over 85 Bald Eagles roosting in the area.

This Bald Eagle flew over our heads, about 30 feet or so. 2nd photo: Perched Bald Eagle

PS: No editing was done to this photo - not even any cropping (as I need to do with most 300mm photos of birds)

banjon > Day 313 - Not The Good Pair

This is not the coveted GOOD pair of scissors. So I was able to take a few photos. :)
I tried my best, but I heard they are locked away in some remote safe location.
Away from idle hands.

The amber glow from Big Blue's brother.
(I wish!)

Having fun with an old computer case. I liked the repeating small squares.

Setup: Halogen light onto yellow paper back lighting a vented side panel.

banjon > Day 309 - Snowbound

We are experiencing our 8th snow storm this year. Another Nor'easter has hit us from the south, dumping another foot or more, mixing with freezing rain. When that finishes, another storm is following to dump some more on us. Then the temp should plunge down to -15C by Friday. Ah.. the joys of Winter!

Just when you think the white stuff stops or may ease up. Surprise! This year Halifax is 5th on the list for most snow in Canada. With this snow fall it may put us into 4th nearing 140cm/4.5ft since Dec.

At least its not White Juan (named after Hurricane Juan that hit Halifax in 2003) that dumped 96cm/3.5ft in 24hrs (set a record back then) and some areas hit 150cm/5ft unofficially. Winds were steady 60/80kph, with several gusts topping 147kph. Visibility was 1-meter or less for 8 hours as snow was averaging almost a 20cm/hour (about 8in/hr). That was a fun storm - the snow banks were so high, kids were touching street lights and cars were literally buried. I remember a few mini vans the snow was half way up the side windows. You gotta love Winter! :)
