banjon > Day 96 - Bubble Waves

I had an idea tonight about separating the bubbles from the DVD. This allowed the light to use the bubbles as convex mirrors onto the DVD. With a glass partition higher that the DVD and bubbles, it allowed for more bubbles, double thick with glass in between. I thought it might show some neat colors, but I was blown away by what was created. The colors not only spread out, beams multiplied both in quantity and intensity. The colors were very vivid. I added an aluminum reflector which caused even more light to spread out among the bubbles. :)

The setup is very easy - two glass dishes, one square, and one round to fit a DVD inside. fill both with water. Soap in the bigger dish only. The water in DVD dish causes the light waves to bend and arc. The bubbles in the bigger dish (a moat), bigger bubbles cause waves of light (like here), while the small create the little beams that fill the DVD with color. Lastly light source, brighter the better.

I'll post some others. I need to take a few days to catch up on my To Do list. hehe

banjon > Day 85 - Mallard Dew

This young hip Mallard is sporting a new dew that is all the rage this Spring. Just look at how it attracts the ladies! You might say he is the Billy Idol of the Frog Pond. The girls were chasing this rebel all over the pond. Lucky fella!

We visited the Frog Pond today - don't know why they call it that - there are never any frogs. The wind and rain were kicking up - temp was getting quite chilly. I sure hope winter is not trying to come back for another round.

banjon > Day 156 - Time for some 150's

Every now and then there comes a time when the strings need to be changed. :) This is my favorite guitar, a Peavey Cropper Classic. I love the nice deep sound it gives out. It has a Mahogany and Maple base. I bought it used, and replaced the pickups with some Seymour Duncans. I also wired the pickups for series and parallel. Coupled with a Line 6 PodXT (awesome device simulates all kinds of amps) and a old Alesis drum machine.

Next to Photography, playing and writing music is another of my favorite past times.
I love to crank it up, but the neighbors would have a conniption fit! hehe

banjon > Day 159 - Nature's Canvas

Today the we were feeling the cool winds, or gusts, from the recent tropical storm that passed us by. As I was watching the leaves hanging on for dear life, and birds bobbing on branches getting wind-feather, I noticed the field of yellow wild flowers just swaying in time.

So I tried a few shots and dug out the ND8 filter to help with the longer exposure that was needed. This is one of a few nice shots I got of leaves and flowers swaying in the wind. I mounted the camera on a tripod and used manual focus, as there was hardly anything I could focus on - maybe a rock here or there, but had to wait til the wind calmed to get focus and leave it like that - then snap some shots on the next gust of wind.

I did notice a Robin hanging out in one of the trees. Literally. He stayed for about a good 10 to 15 minutes, letting me snap away while he rode the storm/wind out. It reminded me of someone trying not to spill a drop of beer, the whole body sways and moves, except the hand the beer is in. I thought I was watching him surfing for a few moments as it looked like he caught some wicked air waves. He even stretched his wings behind his head, sort of like knuckle cracking for birds I guess. He put up a good fight, held onto the branch best he could - feathers were all ruffled, you can tell he was getting perturbed messing his nice dew. After a while, he gave up and took shelter on the ground.

It was enjoyable to watch. Sure beats the heat.

banjon > Day 62 - Just Dial....

Ever wonder why phone pads start with 1 on the top row, while calculators, registers, and the keypads on your keyboards start with the 1 on the bottom row. Is it so we don't mix them up, or just to be different.

banjon > Day 21 - Rainy and Fog-ridden Weekend Blues

Its raining like cats and dogs, plus a few hamsters, or anything else that's worthy.

Let's see there rain, plenty of it, fog, so thick you can't see your neighbors house, yup must be the weekend. Monday's forecast - Bright and Sunny! I think Mother Nature loves to mess with our heads. At least it's not snow! They were calling for 50cm(20in).

Anyway, I tried to get out and make the best of the conditions. Sometimes the rain and fog offer for some nice photos if you get there at the right moment. Greens can become very vibrant, if you can find some. Usually lichens come alive during rain and fog - think of the fog as a ultraviolet light. Also, these red picker bushes become vibrant red during the winter - I don't know what they are called, but you see fields of fire engine red - with the snow it looks really nice.

I decided to check out Peggy's Cove today - with the incoming tide, fog and rain - woohoo! I took one of the back roads and found this old abandoned house on one of the lakes. Looks like it was recently abandoned a few years ago. So sad to see this happen. I always wonder what happened that caused them to leave such a beautiful location.

banjon > Day 233 - Loading Containers

A large container ship waits while being loaded with large (40ft) shipping containers at one of Halifax's many terminals. Destination... somewhere in the world. I am still amazed at the height of these ships and the cranes that load them. The long shore men move containers so fast, what seems to be a blink of the eye, they are loaded and heading out to sea.

I saw a large car carrier unload one day. It was amazing to see the stern of ship transform into a four lane ramp. If you think containers move fast, when you see Audi's, BMW's, and others rolling off the ship by the hundreds, possible thousand or more, you are left in awe thinking, can we really build something that huge! :)

Notice the white van on the loading dock. :)

banjon > Day 291 (1/2) - Watching Waves

A young lady braves the elements to watch the tide going out.

Nova Scotians really enjoy the ocean any time of year. Its very common to see a handful, sometimes dozens of people just walking the cobble stone beaches. Even in the cold, the thumping of crashing waves gets into you.

I was never much of a beach-comber as a kid. Never really cared for the ocean to be honest. That all changed when I moved here. The beaches are not commercialized here. Everyone owns the beaches. No one can stop anyone from walking on any beach. There is no such thing as a private beach. There are numerous times when it was just the ocean and me. What a feeling. :)

I included an odd signage photo (here)
